BEVERLY DOLENZ WALSH, PhD
Psychologist . Owner, Brookside Ranch
I am a Licensed Psychologist and Life and Family Coach.
I earned my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas A&M University in 1995 and have been licensed to practice in the State of Texas since 1996. My training for Life and Family Coaching is with MentorCoach. My initial introduction to Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) was through EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association) in 2009. In 2011, I met Tim and Bettina Jobe at a training for Natural Lifemanship. Immediately I saw the value of the NL model of TF-EAP (Trauma-Focused EAP). In 2017, I worked to gain my certification in TF-EAP and was asked to become a trainer for Natural Lifemanship in 2019. Introducing, educating, and training others in the NL model is one of my joys. In 2024, I became a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator. Combining the wisdom of Natural Lifemanship and The Daring Way™ to help people "Be Herd and Be Brave" has been transformative. I am married with 2 children and have several pets. I actively volunteer in my Church and community. I love to be outdoors as much as possible and had the joy of being part of Houston's Only All-Women Triathlon Training Team, HeartZones and Tribal Team Sports. I started out as a "traditional office-based therapist"; working lots with kids and families, playing lots of Jenga. One night at a Houston Psychological Association (HPA) event in 2009, my friend and colleague, Dr Laurie Baldwin, asked if I had considered changing practice locations and if I would be interested in joining her at Red Dun Ranch. The idea felt right. We got to moving furniture that weekend, I started seeing clients, and I went searching for opportunities to learn more about horses and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. My journey into Equine Assisted Psychotherapy started at Red Dun Ranch, where I practiced for 10 wonderful years. For all the right reasons, the owner literally decided to "sell the ranch" and I went looking for a place to continue the work I love with horses. I would frequently say to friends and clients, "You don't want to be the one who owns the horses ... You want to KNOW someone who owns the horses". Well, I'm now the one who is the proud owner of the Red Dun Ranch herd (Karma!) that in April 2020 became the Brookside Ranch herd.
One of the greatest influences on my EAP practice is my involvement with Natural Lifemanship (NL). NL's tag line is "The Science and Art of Connection". At NL, we believe that good principles are good principles; that relationships are relationships; that through healthy relationships, with a person and / or a horse, healing from trauma happens. In partnering with the Brookside Ranch herd, I witness the power of learning that "horse lessons are life lessons". As one who loves kitschy phrases, at Brookside Ranch people are able to "Experience a Stable Relationship".
